About this section

Some of the most memorable parts of a Korea trip are a short ride from the big cities: the fortress walls of Suwon, the border area at the DMZ, the riverside scenery around Chuncheon and Gapyeong, and the ancient royal tombs and temples of Gyeongju.

Go independently or take a tour? Many day trips are easy by public transport — Suwon is on the Seoul subway network, and Gyeongju is reachable by KTX. Others, like the DMZ, can only be visited on an organised tour because access is controlled. This section says which is which and what each option costs in time and money.

Plan around transport. The deciding factor for most day trips is the last train or bus back. Guides here list the route and how to check return times, and link to how to book KTX tickets where trains are involved.

Booking tours. Where a tour is the sensible option, guides may link to booking platforms (marked as partner links). Commission never decides whether we suggest a tour — see the affiliate disclosure.

Day-trip guides will be published here with sources and a facts-checked date.
