Off the Beaten Path

Smaller cities, islands and quiet valleys, and whether they're worth the detour.

Guides for this section are being researched and checked. Meanwhile, start with the Start Here page or the Getting Around guides.

About this section

Most first trips to Korea run along the same line: Seoul, a KTX ride to Busan, maybe a flight to Jeju. That route works, and there is nothing wrong with it. But the country is small and the trains are fast, so places that look remote on a map — a hanok village in the south-west, an island off the south coast, a mountain temple in Gyeongsang — are often only two or three hours from a big city.

This section is for those places. Each guide answers the question a visitor actually has: is it worth the extra day, and how do you get there without a car? We give the train or bus connection with its journey time and fare (and the date we checked it), what there is to do once you arrive, how long to stay, and when it’s better to skip.

We only write about places whose transport and opening details can be checked against an official page — the operator, the city or county tourism office, or the Korea Tourism Organization. Where a place needs a car or a tour to reach in practice, the guide says so up front.

If you are still deciding on the basic shape of your trip, start with the Itineraries section, then come back here to swap a day in a big city for something quieter. For the trains themselves, see Getting Around.
