About this section
Jeju is a volcanic island off Korea’s south coast, known for Hallasan (South Korea’s highest mountain), lava tubes, coastal walking trails and a milder climate than the mainland. Almost everyone arrives by domestic flight; the Seoul (Gimpo)–Jeju route is one of the busiest air routes in the world, so fares and seat availability swing a lot with the season.
The big decision: car or no car. Jeju’s sights are spread around the island. Renting a car gives the most freedom; foreign visitors generally need a valid International Driving Permit along with their home licence. Without a car, the island’s bus network works for the coast and main towns, and day tours cover the far-flung sights.
Where to stay. Jeju City (north, near the airport) is practical for short stays and arrivals; Seogwipo and Jungmun (south) are closer to waterfalls, the resort area and many hiking trailheads.
Weather. Wind, rain and occasional summer typhoons can cancel flights and close trails, so leave some slack in your plans.
Guides on routes, transport and sights in Jeju will be added here, each with sources and a facts-checked date. For booking-related basics, see Planning Guides.
