Where to Stay in Seoul: Best Neighborhoods by Trip Style
Fares checked against AREX and Airport Limousine timetables, rules against Jongno-gu/Seoul and Airbnb notices, on 8 Oct 2026.
First-timers should stay in Myeongdong or Jongno, inside Seoul's old centre, with ₩17,000 airport buses to the door. Pick Seoul Station or Hongdae for late flights and the ₩4,650–5,350 AREX train, Gangnam only for business or southern plans, and expect full hotels: occupancy averaged 79.2% in 2025 (checked 8 Oct 2026).

For a first trip, stay in Myeongdong or Jongno; for a late flight or an early KTX, Seoul Station; for nightlife on a budget, Hongdae. This guide is the base-choosing page of our Seoul section: one comparison table, then what each area is like and who should skip it.
The decision is less about the hotel than about the line it sits on. Seoul’s sights cluster north of the Han River, and the airport links (the AREX train and ₩17,000 limousine buses) stop in only some neighbourhoods. Fares below were checked on the operators’ own pages on 8 October 2026.
Which Seoul neighbourhood fits your trip?
- First visit, 3–5 nights, palaces and markets: Myeongdong or Jongno (Insadong, Anguk, Jongno 3-ga). Our 3-day Seoul itinerary is built around this base.
- Landing late, carrying big bags, or taking the KTX: Seoul Station. The AREX Express ends there and the KTX departs from the same building.
- Nightlife, cafés, a tight budget: Hongdae, Hapjeong or Yeonnam-dong, on the AREX all-stop line.
- Muslim travellers (common from Malaysia, Singapore, India and the UK) or anyone after international food: Itaewon.
- Business trip, COEX, Lotte World Tower, or day trips south: Gangnam or Jamsil.
- Repeat visit, design shops and pop-ups: Seongsu.
- A week or more: split it. Three or four nights in the centre, then Hongdae or Seongsu for a different side of the city.
How do the main areas compare?

AREX fares are for an adult transit card from Terminal 1; from Terminal 2 add ₩600 (₩5,250 to Hongik University, ₩5,350 to Seoul Station). A single-journey ticket adds ₩100 and a ₩500 deposit. The ₩17,000 limousine fare is the same on every regular Airport Limousine route, ₩12,000 for children. Our Incheon Airport to Seoul guide covers every option, including taxis.
Why do first-timers stay in Myeongdong or Jongno?
Because the old centre is where your first three days happen. Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Insadong, Bukchon, Namdaemun Market and Cheonggyecheon are all a short walk or one or two subway stops away, so you lose little time in transit.
Myeongdong is the shopping and street-food district on Line 4. It’s two stops from Seoul Station (via Hoehyeon, the Namdaemun Market station) and next to Euljiro 1-ga on Line 2. Hotels are mostly mid-range business and chain properties, packed close together. The upside is that everything is open late and the street stalls fill the main lanes in the evening; our street food guide covers what to try there. The downside: it is crowded and commercial, and some of the cheapest rooms are very small.
Airport buses make it easy with luggage. 6001 runs via Dongdaemun, Myeongdong, Seoul Station and Sinyongsan; 6015 runs via Myeongdong, Chungjeongno, Gongdeok and Mapo. Both cost ₩17,000 for adults.
Jongno (Insadong, Anguk, Ikseon-dong, Jongno 3-ga) is the quieter, more traditional half of the centre. Anguk on Line 3 is the closest station to Bukchon and a short walk from Changdeokgung; Jongno 3-ga links Lines 1, 3 and 5. You’ll find small hotels, guesthouses and licensed hanok stays here. Airport bus 6011 stops at Changgyeonggung, Changdeokgung, Anguk and Gyeongbokgung stations, and 6002 runs along Jongno 1-ga to 6-ga (both ₩17,000).
Is Seoul Station a good base?
Yes, if transport matters more than atmosphere. Seoul Station is the end of both AREX lines: the AREX Express (₩13,000, 43 minutes from Terminal 1, last train from T1 at 22:48) and the all-stop train (₩4,750 from T1 by card). The KTX to Busan and Gyeongju leaves from the same building, and Lines 1 and 4 run north into the centre and south toward Yongsan.
That makes it the best base for three kinds of trip: a flight that lands after 21:00, a trip with large suitcases (no transfers between airport and hotel lobby, for hotels near the station), and an itinerary with several KTX day trips. Myeongdong is two stops away on Line 4 when you want dinner.
The trade-off is the evenings. The area around the station is offices and transport, with fewer restaurants and less street life than Myeongdong or Hongdae. Check the walk from the AREX exit to your hotel on a map before booking; “near Seoul Station” in a listing can mean a 15-minute uphill walk.
Should you stay in Hongdae?
Stay in Hongdae if you want the city’s nightlife, live music, cafés and a cheaper room, and you don’t mind noise. Hongik University Station is on Line 2, the Gyeongui-Jungang Line and the AREX all-stop train, two stops before Seoul Station. From Terminal 1 that ride costs ₩4,650 by card, the cheapest airport link of any area in this guide. Airport bus 6002 also stops at Hongik University and Hapjeong stations.
The area spreads in three directions. Hongdae proper (around the university and exit 9) is the loudest, busiest at weekends. Yeonnam-dong, north along the Gyeongui Line Forest Park, is quieter, with cafés and small guesthouses. Hapjeong, one stop south on Line 2 (and Line 6), is calmer and has several mid-range hotels.
Skip it if your days are palace-heavy: Gyeongbokgung is a cross-town ride with a transfer. Light sleepers should ask for a room away from the street.
What about Gongdeok and Mapo?
Gongdeok is the quiet alternative to Hongdae and Seoul Station. It’s one stop from each on AREX, and four lines meet there: AREX, the Gyeongui-Jungang Line, and Lines 5 and 6. AREX all-stop trains from Terminal 1 cost ₩4,650, and airport bus 6015 also stops at Gongdeok and Mapo stations.
There’s little to see on foot apart from the riverside at Mapo, so it works best for travellers who want a calmer, mid-range hotel and don’t mind riding the subway everywhere. Line 5 runs straight to Gwanghwamun, the stop for Gyeongbokgung’s main gate area.
Is Itaewon or Gangnam better for you?
Itaewon (Line 6) is Seoul’s most international neighbourhood. For Muslim travellers it’s the practical choice: the Seoul Central Mosque is about 500 m from Itaewon Station exit 3, and the densest cluster of halal-certified restaurants is around it (see our halal food guide). Hannam-dong next door has upmarket restaurants and boutiques. Two cautions: the streets are steep, which matters with heavy bags, and the area draws very large crowds around Halloween. There’s no AREX stop, so plan on a bus, taxi or a transfer from Seoul Station or Gongdeok.
Gangnam is the business and shopping district south of the river, on Line 2 and the Sinbundang Line. It suits business travellers, COEX and Lotte World Tower visitors, concerts at venues in southern Seoul, and anyone heading south by SRT from Suseo. For a sightseeing trip it’s the wrong side of the city: most first-trip sights are north of the river, so expect to add a long ride to most days. If you do stay south, pick a hotel near a Line 3 station (Sinsa, Apgujeong): Line 3 runs to Anguk and Gyeongbokgung without a change.
Seongsu (Line 2) is a former factory district of cafés, design shops and pop-up stores. It’s a good second base on a longer trip, but hotels are fewer than in the centre and it’s not on an airport line.
How much will a room cost, and when do hotels fill up?
Seoul hotels are busier and pricier than before the pandemic. According to Cushman & Wakefield’s 2026 Seoul hospitality report (via the Hankyung, 12 August 2026), the city’s hotels averaged 79.2% occupancy in 2025, 71.2% of guests came from abroad, and revenue per available room was ₩207,300, up about two-thirds on 2019. The same report counts roughly 53,675 hotel rooms, and notes supply hasn’t kept up with record arrivals.
We don’t list nightly prices: they change by date, and an undated rate would mislead you. What the numbers do mean:
- Book early for peak dates. Spring blossom season, autumn, Korean holidays and the year-end period fill first.
- Compare by area, not just by price. A cheaper hotel in Gangnam can cost you an hour a day in transit; a slightly dearer one in Jongno can save it.
- Check the bed and room size. Central budget rooms can be very small. Families should look for “family” or “triple” rooms specifically; our Seoul 7-day plan for first-timers also covers pacing with kids.
Hotel, guesthouse, hanok or Airbnb?
Before you book any Seoul stay
- The nearest subway station and exit, and whether your airport bus or AREX stops there
- The walk from the station: hills and stairs matter with luggage (see our limited-mobility guide)
- For a hanok or guesthouse: shared or private bathroom, and the check-in time
- For Airbnb: the Korean business registration number on the listing
- For Bukchon: how guests come and go outside 10:00–17:00
Airbnb in Korea now lists only registered properties. Airbnb required a business registration certificate from new Korean listings from October 2024 and from existing ones by 16 October 2025; listings without one can’t accept stays from 1 January 2026. Registered types include the foreign-tourist urban homestay licence (외국인관광 도시민박업) and the hanok experience licence (한옥체험업). If a host asks you to pay outside the platform or the listing has no registration, book elsewhere.
Hanok stays are mostly in Jongno: Bukchon, Seochon and around Insadong. They’re memorable for a night or two, but rooms are often floor-mattress style with thin walls; check bathroom arrangements if that matters to you.
Guesthouses and hostels cluster in Hongdae, Myeongdong and Jongno, which suits solo and budget travellers. Our Korea on a budget guide has daily cost ranges.
Common mistakes
- Booking Gangnam for a palace-and-market trip. It looks central on a map of the whole city, but most first-trip sights are north of the river.
- Ignoring the airport link. An AREX or limousine stop near the hotel saves a tired transfer with bags on day one.
- Arriving after 23:00 with a hotel off every night route. After the last AREX Express (22:48 from T1), late-night buses run from about 23:40 for ₩17,000–18,000; check whether one stops near you, or budget for a taxi.
- Choosing Hongdae for a quiet stay. Book Yeonnam-dong or Hapjeong instead.
- Booking a Bukchon hanok without asking about the red-zone hours.
Once your base is fixed, pick a transit card (a Seoul subway ride costs ₩1,550 by card). If Busan is next, our Busan where-to-stay guide works the same way. There are no hotel booking links in this guide: the hotel partners we work with haven’t approved this site, and we’d rather show none than a generic search page. Compare prices for your dates on any booking site, and check the route from the airport to the door before you pay.
Questions people ask
- What is the best area to stay in Seoul for first-timers?
- Myeongdong or Jongno. Both sit in the old centre, a stop or two from Gyeongbokgung, Insadong and Namdaemun Market, and both have direct ₩17,000 airport buses (6001 to Myeongdong, 6011 to Anguk). Myeongdong is livelier and more commercial; Jongno is closer to the palaces.
- Is Hongdae or Myeongdong better?
- Myeongdong for sightseeing, because the palaces and markets are close. Hongdae for nightlife, cafés, younger crowds and the cheapest airport link: the AREX all-stop train stops at Hongik University Station for ₩4,650 from Terminal 1. Expect noise in Hongdae on Friday and Saturday nights.
- Is Gangnam a good place to stay for tourists?
- Only if your plans are in the south: business, COEX, Lotte World Tower or concerts there. Most first-trip sights are north of the Han River, so a Gangnam base adds a cross-river ride to most days. Line 3 from Sinsa or Apgujeong reaches Anguk and Gyeongbokgung without a change.
- Can I stay in a hanok in Bukchon?
- Yes, licensed hanok stays operate there. Note that the red zone around Bukchon-ro 11-gil limits tourist visits to 10:00–17:00, with a ₩100,000 fine outside those hours. Ask your host how guests should come and go in the evening before you book.
- Is Airbnb legal in Seoul?
- Only registered listings. Since October 2025 Airbnb has required a Korean business registration for every Korean listing, and unregistered ones cannot take stays from 1 January 2026. Look for the registration number on the listing; a hotel or licensed guesthouse avoids the question.
