A lean backpacker day in Seoul costs about ₩67,500 in October 2026: a ₩31,900 weekday capsule bed at a Seoul youth hostel, three cheap Korean meals for about ₩22,600, a ₩5,000 Climate Card day pass, a ₩3,000 palace ticket and about ₩5,000 of eSIM data. Beds and long-distance trains move the total most; transport, museums and palaces barely dent it.
Key takeaways
- Lean Seoul day: about ₩67,500 (capsule bed ₩31,900 weekdays, three set meals ~₩22,600, Climate Card ₩5,000, palace ₩3,000, data ~₩5,000).
- Seoul average meal prices: kimbap ₩3,869 (July 2026), kimchi-stew set ₩8,654 and kalguksu ₩10,038 (April 2026).
- Palaces cost ₩1,000–3,000 and every Wednesday is free at four of the five sites; foreigners 18 and under or 65+ always enter free.
- The National Museum of Korea is free until its reported switch to paid entry in 2027 (expected ₩5,000–10,000).
- Biggest single saving: the ₩4,750 all-stop airport train instead of the ₩13,000 express or a ₩17,000 limousine bus.

Korea on a budget works better than its reputation suggests. A lean backpacker day in Seoul costs about ₩67,500 in October 2026, and most of that is the bed. Subway rides, palace tickets and set meals are cheap; long-distance trains, weekend beds and nights out are what break a budget.
Every price below was checked on 5 October 2026, on the operator’s own page where one exists. For fares we’ve already covered in detail we link the full guide rather than repeat it, and you can add up your own trip with the Korea trip cost estimator. More planning help is in our Planning Guides.
What a backpacker day costs
This is one solo traveller’s weekday in Seoul, built only from prices we could verify. It isn’t the cheapest possible day (you could skip the palace or eat convenience-store food), but it is a realistic floor for a day of sightseeing with three sit-down meals.
Lean backpacker day in Seoul (₩, checked 5 Oct 2026)
| Item | Lean (solo) | Sharing a twin room | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bed | 31,900 (capsule) | 42,900 (half of ₩85,800) | Hi Seoul Youth Hostel, weekday |
| Breakfast: kimbap | 3,869 | 3,869 | Seoul average, July 2026 |
| Lunch: kimchi-stew set | 8,654 | 8,654 | Seoul average, April 2026 |
| Dinner | 10,038 (kalguksu) | 18,154 (samgyetang) | Seoul average, April 2026 |
| Transport | 5,000 (Climate Card day) | 5,000 | Seoul city |
| Sightseeing | 3,000 (Gyeongbokgung) | 3,000 | Royal Palaces and Tombs Center |
| Mobile data | 5,000 (₩35,000 ÷ 7 days) | 5,000 | KT / SK Telecom eSIM |
| Day total | 67,461 | 86,577 |
The one-off costs on top are small: a ₩3,000 card for the Climate Card (or a T-money card for about the same), and the airport train into the city. On a Friday or Saturday night the capsule costs about ₩38,300, since the hostel adds 20% at weekends.
What the table leaves out is just as important. A KTX ride from Seoul to Busan is ₩54,400 in economy, almost a full day’s budget in one ticket. Barbecue nights, cafés and shopping are also extra. If you plan to see two or three cities, budget for the trains separately rather than averaging them into the day.
Where the money goes: beds
Accommodation is the line you can least avoid and the hardest to verify, because most hostels price dynamically on booking sites. The one official, published rate card we found for budget beds in Seoul is Hi Seoul Youth Hostel’s, in Yeongdeungpo, south-west of the centre.
Hi Seoul Youth Hostel room rates, general price incl. VAT (₩, checked 5 Oct 2026)
| Room | Sleeps | Weekday price | Per person if full |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capsule | 1 | 31,900 | 31,900 |
| Standard single | 1 | 59,400 | 59,400 |
| Standard twin | 2 | 85,800 | 42,900 |
| Standard triple | 3 | 95,700 | 31,900 |
| Standard quad | 4 | 105,600 | 26,400 |
| Dormitory 6 beds | 6 (whole room) | 145,200 | 24,200 |
| Dormitory 10 beds | 10 (whole room) | 220,000 | 22,000 |
Read the dorm rows carefully: the hostel rents its dormitories as whole rooms, not by the bed. A solo traveller can’t book one bunk for ₩22,000. The dorms only pay off for a group, and for four friends the standard quad at ₩26,400 each is already close. Weekend prices are 20% higher and peak-season prices 30% higher than the table.
The location is the trade-off. Yeongdeungpo is on the opposite side of the city from the palaces, so you’ll ride the subway every day. That is fine on a Climate Card, but it is time. Private hostels near Hongdae, Myeongdong or Jongno cost more or less depending on the night; compare them against these numbers rather than against a guidebook range.
Hi Seoul Youth Hostel (하이서울유스호스텔)Naver MapGoogle MapsWhere the money goes: food
Eating cheaply in Korea means eating Korean set meals, not Western food. The Korea Consumer Agency tracks the average price of eight everyday dishes in Seoul on its Chamgagyeok portal every month, and the press reports the numbers. These are averages across ordinary restaurants, so you’ll find cheaper and dearer.
Average restaurant prices in Seoul (₩, Korea Consumer Agency)
| Dish | Average price | Data month |
|---|---|---|
| Kimbap (one roll) | 3,869 | July 2026 |
| Jajangmyeon | 7,731 | April 2026 |
| Kimchi-jjigae set (stew with rice and sides) | 8,654 | April 2026 |
| Kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) | 10,038 | April 2026 |
| Naengmyeon (cold noodles) | 12,615 | April 2026 |
| Samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) | 18,154 | April 2026 |
| Samgyeopsal (pork belly, 200 g) | 21,321 | April 2026 |
Prices are rising: kimbap was up 6.8% year on year in July 2026, so expect a little more than the table. Two things keep food costs down. First, a stew set (baekban) comes with rice and side dishes, which makes it a full meal for under ₩9,000 on average. Second, barbecue is priced per 200 g portion, and one portion of pork belly (₩21,321) already costs more than two stew sets, so keep barbecue for nights when you’re sharing. Many grill places expect two servings per table anyway; our guide to how ordering works in Korean restaurants covers solo dining, free side-dish refills and why you never tip.
Where the money goes: getting around
Transport is where Korea is cheapest, as long as you use the local options. We’ve covered each one in its own guide; here are the budget choices.
- Airport to Seoul: the all-stop AREX train is ₩4,750 from Terminal 1 to Seoul Station by transit card, against ₩13,000 for the express and about ₩17,000 for a limousine bus. Times and the late-night options are in our Incheon Airport to Seoul guide.
- Inside Seoul: a subway ride is ₩1,550 by card. A Climate Card short-term pass costs ₩5,000 for one day and ₩20,000 for seven, plus ₩3,000 for the card, so it pays from the fourth ride of the day. Our transit card comparison has the full break-even table.
- Between cities: KTX Seoul–Busan is ₩54,400 in economy since the September 2026 fare cut (how to book KTX tickets). The express bus is the cheaper option: the standard bus from Seoul to Busan cost ₩26,700 before the transport ministry raised express-bus fare ceilings by 9% on 1 October 2026. The new fare is up to about ₩29,100; check kobus.co.kr for the exact price on your date. The bus is slower than the train.
- Rail passes: a Korail Pass starts at ₩131,000 for two travel days and rarely beats single tickets on a backpacker route. We ran the numbers in Is the Korail Pass worth it?
Free and nearly free sightseeing
Seoul’s big historic sights are priced like a cup of coffee, and several are free on the right day.
Seoul palaces and museum: adult prices (₩, checked 5 Oct 2026)
| Site | Adult price | Free when |
|---|---|---|
| Gyeongbokgung | 3,000 | Wearing hanbok; age 18 and under or 65+ |
| Changdeokgung (buildings) | 3,000 | Every Wednesday; hanbok; 18 and under or 65+ |
| Changdeokgung Secret Garden | +5,000 | Never free on Wednesdays; needs the buildings ticket too |
| Deoksugung | 1,000 | Every Wednesday; hanbok; 18 and under or 65+ |
| Changgyeonggung | 1,000 | Every Wednesday; hanbok; 18 and under or 65+ |
| Jongmyo Shrine | 1,000 | Every Wednesday; hanbok; 18 and under or 65+ |
| Integrated palace pass (4 palaces + Jongmyo, 6 months) | 6,000 | — |
| National Museum of Korea, permanent galleries | Free | Always (in 2026) |
The palace rules come from the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center’s fee page. Wednesday is “Culture Day” (문화가 있는 날), now held every week, and the fee page applies it to every site above except Gyeongbokgung and the Secret Garden. Korean press reported the weekly free day being phased in, with Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung and Jongmyo joining from October 2026, so ask at the ticket office if your Wednesday visit falls early in the rollout. The free entry for foreigners is by age: 18 and under, or 65 and over, so bring your passport. The six-month integrated pass saves ₩3,000 only if you visit all five sites; for one or two palaces, buy single tickets. The Secret Garden isn’t in the pass and sells out fast in October and November.
The National Museum of Korea in Yongsan is free for its permanent galleries, open until 21:00 on Wednesdays and Saturdays. That may not last: Financial News reported on 1 September 2026 that the museum will start charging in 2027, with the month still under discussion and an adult price expected between ₩5,000 and ₩10,000. If it’s on your list, 2026 is the year to go.
Seoul’s city government also runs free guided walking tours led by trained city guides. A February 2026 city notice lists English among the languages, with reservations on dobo.visitseoul.net. Bookings for each month open on the 15th of the month before, and a tour runs only if at least two people sign up. Tickets to palaces on the route, transport and any hands-on activity are extra. The tours paused in August 2026 because of the heat, so check the site for your dates.
Ten money-saving rules
- Take the all-stop airport train. ₩4,750 instead of ₩13,000–17,000 is the biggest single saving on arrival day.
- Always tap a card. A single-journey subway ticket costs ₩1,650 against ₩1,550 by card, and only card users get bus–subway transfer discounts.
- Buy the Climate Card only for busy days. At ₩5,000 a day it beats pay-as-you-go from the fourth ride in Seoul, and it’s useless outside Seoul.
- Do palaces on a Wednesday. Four of the five sites are free; save Gyeongbokgung for another day.
- See the National Museum while it’s free. The permanent galleries could take a whole day.
- Eat sets, not barbecue, when you’re alone. A kimchi-stew set averages ₩8,654; barbecue is priced per portion and adds up fast for one person.
- Put trains in a separate budget. One Seoul–Busan KTX ticket is ₩54,400; the express bus is roughly half that but twice as slow.
- Book weekdays for beds. The youth hostel’s weekend price is 20% higher; many private hostels behave the same way.
- Use a Korean carrier eSIM if your phone supports it. ₩35,000 buys seven days of unlimited data; our eSIM vs SIM vs pocket Wi-Fi guide compares the alternatives.
- Ask for an immediate tax refund. At tax-free shops, show your passport and the tax comes off at the till on purchases under ₩1,000,000 each, up to ₩5,000,000 per stay.
Data, phone and paying
A data plan is a daily cost too. A Korean carrier eSIM is ₩35,000 for seven days of unlimited data at KT or SK Telecom, or ₩6,500 for one day, which works out to about ₩5,000 a day on a week-long trip. App eSIMs are priced in US dollars and land in a similar range. If you’d rather buy before you fly:
Cards work almost everywhere, but transit-card top-ups at stations still need cash, so keep some won for that. For a full first-trip list, see the printable Korea trip checklist.
A 7-day backpacker budget
Putting it together for a week split between Seoul and Busan, using the lean column:
Example 7-day budget, Seoul and Busan (₩, checked 5 Oct 2026)
| Item | Cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 7 lean days (bed, food, transport, one sight, data) | 472,227 | 7 × ₩67,461, weekday bed price |
| Weekend uplift on two capsule nights | 12,760 | +20% on ₩31,900 × 2 |
| Incheon Airport → Seoul | 4,750 | AREX all-stop train |
| Busan → Gimhae Airport (fly home from Busan) | 1,800 | Light rail, card fare (₩1,600–1,800) |
| Transit card | 3,000 | Climate Card or T-money |
| Seoul → Busan | 54,400 | KTX economy (bus is cheaper) |
| Total | 548,937 | Before flights, insurance and nights out |
This assumes Busan costs the same as Seoul per day, which is roughly right for transport (Busan’s metro is ₩1,600–1,800 by card) but untested for beds. It also assumes you fly home from Busan’s Gimhae airport; flying out of Incheon means a second long-distance ticket back to Seoul. Dates matter too: the youth hostel charges 30% more in peak season, and our Korea weather by month guide shows the holiday dates when beds and trains get scarce.
Questions people ask
- How much does a backpacker need per day in Korea?
- About ₩67,500 for a lean day in Seoul in October 2026: a ₩31,900 weekday capsule bed, three cheap set meals for about ₩22,600, a ₩5,000 Climate Card day pass, a ₩3,000 palace ticket and about ₩5,000 of mobile data. Weekends add about ₩6,400 to the capsule price, and every long-distance train or bus comes on top.
- What is the cheapest bed in Seoul?
- The cheapest official price we could verify is the capsule room at Hi Seoul Youth Hostel in Yeongdeungpo: ₩31,900 a night on weekdays including VAT, 20% more at weekends. Its 6- and 10-bed dorms are rented as whole rooms (₩145,200 and ₩220,000), so they only pay for a group.
- Are palaces free in Seoul?
- Every Wednesday is free at Changdeokgung (not the Secret Garden), Changgyeonggung, Deoksugung and Jongmyo; Gyeongbokgung still charges. Foreign visitors aged 18 and under or 65 and over enter free every day, and so does anyone wearing hanbok. Otherwise adult tickets cost ₩1,000–3,000.
- Is the National Museum of Korea free?
- Yes, the permanent galleries are free in 2026; only some special exhibitions charge. Financial News reported on 1 September 2026 that paid entry will start in 2027, with the month still undecided and an adult price expected between ₩5,000 and ₩10,000.
- Is the bus cheaper than the KTX from Seoul to Busan?
- Usually yes. The standard express bus cost ₩26,700 before express-bus fare ceilings rose 9% on 1 October 2026, against ₩54,400 for KTX economy. Check today's bus fare on kobus.co.kr, and expect a slower trip than the train.
- Can I get tax back on shopping in Korea?
- Yes. At shops with the tax-free sign, foreign visitors can get the tax taken off at the till with their passport for purchases under ₩1,000,000 each, up to ₩5,000,000 per stay; larger amounts are refunded at the airport or a city refund point.
