| If you… | Do this |
|---|---|
| Flying in and out of Incheon (US, UK, Canada, Australia, India) | Follow the loop as written: Seoul → Andong → Gyeongju → Busan → fly to Jeju → fly to Gimpo → Seoul. |
| Flying home to Singapore or the Philippines | Split Busan around Jeju: Seoul → Andong → Gyeongju → Busan → Jeju → back to Busan, and fly home from Gimhae. |
| You'd rather see beaches than a folk village | Swap Andong for Gangneung; a direct KTX-Eum runs Busan Bujeon–Gangneung in about 3 h 54 min. |
| You only have two weeks | Cut Andong and the last Seoul block; our 10-day route is the core of this one. |
Key takeaways
- Six bases, 20 nights: Seoul 5, Andong 2, Gyeongju 2, Busan 4, Jeju 4, Seoul 3.

- Andong–Gyeongju takes 43–48 minutes by KTX-Eum (₩15,200); Gyeongju–Busan about 30 minutes (₩10,100).
- Fly Busan–Jeju and Jeju–Gimpo, about an hour each; no train or bridge reaches Jeju.
- Skip the Korail Pass: the rail legs total ₩116,200, and a pass only covers 10 days.

Who is this plan for?
It’s for a first-timer with three weeks, typically from the US, UK, Canada or Australia on a long holiday, or from India, Singapore, Malaysia or the Philippines, planning a month or two out on a laptop. The decision this page answers: how to split 20 nights, in which order, and how each leg is travelled.
- Take this plan if you want the classic Seoul–Gyeongju–Busan line plus an island and one place that still feels like a village, without rushing.
- Take our 10-day itinerary instead if you have under two weeks: it’s the same core (Seoul, Gyeongju, Busan) without Andong, Jeju or Jeonju.
- Take our Seoul 7-day itinerary if a city break is what you want; its Seoul days slot straight into days 2–5 here.
What does the trip look like day by day?

Every hotel change falls on a morning after at least two nights, and no single travel day is longer than about two hours door to door.
Why these six bases?
- Seoul 5 + 3 nights. Your first evening goes to the flight and the palaces close on different days (Gyeongbokgung on Tuesdays, Changdeokgung on Mondays), so five nights give room to shuffle. Three more nights at the end mean your last night is near Incheon, not a long train away from it.
- Andong 2 nights. Hahoe Folk Village is a UNESCO-listed clan village in a bend of the Nakdong River, and it is best in the morning before tour coaches. As a day trip from Seoul it means about four hours on trains.
- Gyeongju 2 nights. Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond is a night visit, and Bulguksa and Seokguram need a full morning.
- Busan 4 nights. The city is spread out, with the coast temple and Haeundae about an hour from Gamcheon and the markets. The fourth night is a buffer for rain or tiredness, which you will need by week two.
- Jeju 4 nights. Three full days on the island plus a spare, so a windy or wet day doesn’t cost you Hallasan or the coast.
Which way round should you do the loop?
The direction depends on where you fly home to. Long-haul flights to North America, Europe, Australia and India leave from Incheon, so the loop ends in Seoul. Busan’s Gimhae Airport has direct flights to Singapore and several Philippine airports, so readers from those markets can save the last Seoul block or move it to the start.
Which direction to run a 3-week Korea loop, by home market (checked 7 Oct 2026)
| You’re flying home to | Run the loop | Last night in |
|---|---|---|
| US, Canada, UK, Australia, India | As written: Seoul → Andong → Gyeongju → Busan → Jeju → Seoul | Seoul |
| Singapore, the Philippines | Seoul → Andong → Gyeongju → Busan → Jeju → back to Busan, home from Gimhae | Busan |
| Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) | As written; ends in Seoul for Incheon flights | Seoul |
If you end in Busan, give it two nights before Jeju and the last three after it, dropping the final Seoul block; our 10-day plan lists the Gimhae direct routes.
Entry rules. US, UK, Canadian, Australian and Singaporean passport holders are exempt from the K-ETA until 31 December 2026; Malaysians need a K-ETA, and individual travellers from India and the Philippines need a visa. Three weeks is well inside the visa-free stay for the exempt passports. Check the official K-ETA portal for yours before you book.
Days 1–5: Seoul
Follow the first four days of our Seoul 7-day itinerary, which has the palace hours, the Bukchon visiting hours and the Secret Garden booking rules. In short:
- Day 1: AREX Express from Incheon to Seoul Station in 43–51 minutes; our Incheon airport guide covers late landings.
- Day 2: Gyeongbokgung (₩3,000, closed Tuesdays), Bukchon, Changdeokgung and the Secret Garden, Insadong.
- Day 3: National Museum of Korea (free), the Han River, Hongdae or Seongsu.
- Day 4: a DMZ tour, which needs a guide and your passport, or Gangnam.
- Day 5: Suwon’s Hwaseong fortress, or a slow day in Seongsu’s cafés.
Where to sleep: near Cheongnyangni, Dongdaemun or Jongno. Day 6’s train to Andong leaves from Cheongnyangni Station in north-east Seoul, not from Seoul Station, and a hotel on Line 1 makes that morning easy.
Set up data and a transit card before you land: our guides to eSIM vs SIM vs pocket Wi-Fi and T-money vs WOWPASS vs the Climate Card take five minutes each.
Days 6–7: Andong and Hahoe Folk Village
- Day 6 morning: KTX-Eum from Cheongnyangni to Andong. In the week of 7 October 2026 nine trains ran daily, taking 1 h 48 min to 2 h 05 min for ₩27,700. Andong Station moved to a new building outside the old centre in 2020, so take a taxi or bus to your hotel.
- Day 6 afternoon: Woryeonggyo, a long wooden footbridge across the river near Andong Dam, best at dusk.
- Day 6 dinner: Andong jjimdak, the city’s braised soy-sauce chicken, at the jjimdak alley in the old market.
- Day 7 morning: Hahoe Folk Village. Buy the ticket at the car park office and take the shuttle to the village gate. Recent visitor guides list ₩5,000 for adults; we couldn’t confirm that on an official page. Allow about two hours to walk the lanes, and climb Buyongdae cliff across the river for the view of the whole bend.
- Day 7 afternoon: Byeongsan Seowon, a Confucian academy on the Nakdong River, also UNESCO-listed. Taxis are the simplest way between the two; check bus times on Naver Map.
Days 8–9: Gyeongju
- Day 8: KTX-Eum Andong to Gyeongju Station, 43–48 minutes for ₩15,200; the slower ITX-Maeum takes about 1 h 22 min for ₩10,400. From Gyeongju Station, take a taxi or bus into the centre.
- Day 8 afternoon and evening: the Daereungwon tomb park, Cheomseongdae observatory, Woljeonggyo bridge, then Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond after dark (₩3,000, open to 22:00).
- Day 9: Bulguksa at opening (free, 09:00–18:00), Seokguram grotto (free), and the National Gyeongju Museum (free).
Our 10-day itinerary has the full timings, ticket prices and closing days for each stop.
Days 10–13: Busan
- Day 10: KTX Gyeongju to Busan Station, 28–35 minutes for ₩10,100, with 32 trains a day. Spend the afternoon in Gamcheon Culture Village and the evening at Jagalchi Fish Market.
- Day 11: Haedong Yonggungsa seaside temple early, then Blueline Park’s beach train (from ₩10,000) and Haeundae.
- Day 12: Taejongdae’s cliff park, a jjimjilbang spa, Gwangalli Bridge at night.
- Day 13: your rest day. Laundry, a slow café morning, or the stop the rain took from you.
Pick a base that suits a four-night stay; our guide to where to stay in Busan compares Haeundae, Seomyeon and Nampo. Seomyeon is the most practical for day 14, as the airport light rail and limousine buses are easy from there. If Busan falls on Saturday 7 November 2026, the Busan Fireworks Festival fills hotels early.
Days 14–17: Jeju
- Day 14: fly from Gimhae to Jeju. The flight is about an hour, with many departures a day; book it when you book your trains. There is no rail or road link to the island.
- Days 15–17: follow our Jeju 3-day itinerary, which has a car loop and a bus version from a Seogwipo base, plus the winter cut-off times for Hallasan’s trails.
- The spare day: keep it unplanned until you see the forecast. Jeju’s wind and fog can close Hallasan trails and ferries to the smaller islands, so a free day lets you move the big hike.
Deciding whether the island earns four nights? Our honest take on whether Jeju is worth visiting covers who should skip it.
Days 18–21: back to Seoul, with Jeonju
- Day 18: fly Jeju to Gimpo, about 1 h 10 min. It is one of the world’s busiest air routes; Jeju Air alone flies up to 26 times each way a day since March 2026. Gimpo is on subway lines 5 and 9 and the AREX, so it is a short ride into the city.
- Day 19: Jeonju day trip. KTX from Yongsan to Jeonju takes from 1 h 26 min, with 25–27 trains a day and fares from ₩31,600 each way. Walk the hanok village, eat bibimbap where it’s famous, and take an evening train back.
- Day 20: a last neighbourhood (Seochon, Euljiro, Mangwon), shopping, or a palace you missed.
- Day 21: AREX Express to Incheon. Leave your hotel about four hours before an international departure.
For day 19, a hotel near Yongsan or Seoul Station saves 20–30 minutes each way.
What can you swap in or out?
- Gangneung instead of Andong: for beaches and coffee rather than a folk village. Since 30 December 2025 KTX-Eum trains run direct from Busan’s Bujeon Station to Gangneung in about 3 h 54 min, but only a few a day, so check the timetable before you commit.
- One week less: drop Andong, the second Seoul block and one Busan night, and you have our 10-day itinerary plus Jeju.
- Rain: Busan’s day 13 and Jeju’s spare day are your buffers. Seoul’s National Museum and Starfield Library take a whole wet afternoon.
- Autumn foliage: colour reaches the south later than Seoul, so this order often catches it twice; see our autumn foliage guide.
- Season by home market: Australian summer holidays fall in Korea’s cold, dry winter (Jeju is milder; Hallasan has early trail cut-offs). UK and US summer holidays meet heat, humidity and the late June–July rains. Our weather by month has the numbers.
What is the budget for 21 days?
Transport and ticket costs per adult for this 3-week route, ₩ (checked 7 Oct 2026)
| Item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| AREX Express, airport ↔ Seoul ×2 | ₩26,000 | ₩13,000 each way |
| KTX-Eum Cheongnyangni–Andong | ₩27,700 | About 1 h 55 min |
| KTX-Eum Andong–Gyeongju | ₩15,200 | ITX-Maeum ₩10,400 |
| KTX Gyeongju–Busan | ₩10,100 | About 30 min |
| KTX Yongsan–Jeonju return | ₩63,200 | ₩31,600 each way |
| Palaces + Secret Garden | ₩11,000 | Integrated ticket ₩6,000 + ₩5,000 |
| Hahoe Folk Village | about ₩5,000 | Not confirmed officially |
| Gyeongju tickets | ₩6,000 | Cheonmachong + Donggung and Wolji |
| Blueline beach train | ₩10,000 | One ride from Mipo |
| Total | ≈ ₩174,000 (≈ US$130) | Excludes the two flights, hotels, food, local transport and tours |
Trains and tickets come to about ₩174,000 a person; the two domestic flights depend on the date you book, and hotels and food are the biggest line, which our Korea trip cost calculator adds by travel style. The dollar figure uses the ECB rate of 5 October 2026 (US$1 = ₩1,343.98). For a tighter budget, our Korea on a budget guide has backpacker day rates.
Is the Korail Pass worth it? No. The five rail rides above cost ₩116,200, while the 4-day pass is ₩234,000, and every pass has to be used within a 10-day window, which this trip’s day-19 Jeonju ride falls outside. Our Korail Pass verdict shows the maths.
What must you book ahead?
Book before you fly
- The three train legs (days 6, 8, 10). Korail opens sales two months ahead, and Friday and Sunday trains fill first; our KTX booking guide shows each screen.
- Both domestic flights (days 14 and 18). Weekend and holiday flights to and from Jeju rise in price as they fill.
- A Jeju rental car, if you drive, plus an International Driving Permit from your home country.
- The Hahoe fire festival, if your dates match an October Saturday.
- The Secret Garden tour (six days ahead online) and a DMZ tour (about a week ahead in autumn).
Everything else on the route, including Bulguksa, Seokguram, Gamcheon and Haedong Yonggungsa, is walk-up.
Questions people ask
- Is three weeks too long for Korea?
- No. Three weeks lets you add Jeju and a traditional town like Andong to the usual Seoul–Gyeongju–Busan route without changing hotels more than every two to four days. Most of the extra time goes into slower days, not more travel.
- Should I buy a Korail Pass for three weeks?
- No. The five rail rides in this plan cost ₩116,200 at October 2026 fares, while a 4-day pass is ₩234,000, and every pass must be used within a 10-day window. The two flights to and from Jeju aren't covered by any rail pass.
- Do I need a car anywhere on this route?
- Only on Jeju, and even there it's optional. Seoul, Busan and Gyeongju work by subway, bus and taxi, and Andong's Hahoe Village is a bus or taxi ride from the station. On Jeju a car saves a lot of time, but our Jeju plan also has a bus version.
- Can I take a ferry to Jeju instead of flying?
- Overnight car ferries do run from Busan and other southern ports, but we couldn't confirm 2026 schedules and fares at an official source, so this plan uses flights. Flights are about an hour and leave Busan's Gimhae Airport many times a day.
- What is the best time of year for three weeks in Korea?
- April, or mid-October to mid-November. Autumn colour moves south through the trip, so a late-October start often catches Seoul first and Gyeongju and Jeju later. July and August are hot and humid, and late June to July is the rainy season.
Next in your trip
- Book the three train legs — Korail opens sales two months ahead; weekend trains go first.
- Plan your Jeju days — Car loop or bus plan from a Seogwipo base.
- Plan your arrival night — AREX, limousine bus or taxi, by landing time.
